Wigan Vets Bike Ride July 2nd
Created by Martin Blondel in 22/07/2011 15:07:39

Congrats to Everyone!

Special Thanks to Malcom Holland and all the guys and girls who took part in their annual bike ride for the SPF.

Here is there story of the Day!

What a great day!!!!

Another brilliant day was had as 40+ riders from the Vets along with a ‘lively’ St. Patrick’s contingent, plus a number of well behaved youngsters, embarked on the second bike ride of the season in aid of the Steve Prescott Foundation which supports Christies and Try Assist. Due to prior engagements in Yorkshire Steve was unable to make the ride this year but his former Saints colleague Chris Joynt again led the way, ably accompanied by his two brothers Brendan and Nick.
First team coach Ronnie Dutch decided his summer training was not up to the required Vets standard and demanded a early morning lift from the Brocket to the starting point of the Top Lock at Wheelton. Despite the best efforts, and threats, of Tony Wright the Top Lock manager would not reduce his demands of £3.50 for a bacon barm!! – don’t think we will be starting here next year!  So the hungry squad set off in brilliant sunshine on the gentle slope to the Lock and Quay at Botany Bay where Boddingtons and cheaper Butties were consumed. Then it was off to the new stop of the Yarrow Bridge at Chorley with Boardy deciding en-route that the weather was indeed to hot, so a gentle dip was in order!  After a brief stop at Fredericks Ice Cream Parlour, where ‘crushed nuts’ were definitely the order of the day, it was a short dash to the very welcoming landlord, Martin, at the White Bear in Adlington. To save Wrighty the trouble Martin had already mugged every punter in his pub and donated the grand sum of £55 - Top man! Next it was a long haul to Red Rock, a trip which was freshened by the rare sight of a passing barge throwing a rope to the bank, demanding to be pulled in, whereupon the boaters deposited £40 in the pot! Thank you – The site of the derelict ‘Bridge 63 pub’ was, for today only, alive with music and colour as Rob Wilky had set his own unique ‘Gay Bar’ up in the car park, much to the astonishment of the passing public. A cracking hour was spent here before the thankfully flat journey to the Crown at New Springs where landlord Kent was grateful of a lift from Dingy behind the bar, once he had mastered the metric till. Then a downhill ride to the Pats before a short hop across Scholes to the buffet at Sams Bar where after a short rub down, a few more pints and a go on the karaoke it was time to put a nightcap on another fantastic day
Great weather, cracking company and all in a good cause – what more could you ask?
